Dan breaks down his entire life in skateboarding; how he got on Krooked, what brought him to SF from Maine, and even the origin of his nickname “Cancer Man” and it has nothing to do with smoking evidently. Lee Saunders: East Coast Bound for Summer

Even though Lee Saunders went to all the trouble of moving to Vancouver from Windsor, Ontario He’s planning an exodus from Vancouver life for July and August of this year. When I asked him why he was planning on leaving Vancouver during the only almost guaranteed rain free months he had this to say:

“As for the trip to the East coast, I will be heading there for the months of July and August. I don’t think I can skate Vancouver for another summer. I would lose my fucking mind. Hahaha... Talk to you soon butt nuggets.”

With photos like this on his Facebook, I won't dispute any nickname Lee gives me...

I don’t know when I earned the nickname “Butt Nuggets” but I’ll take it, I’ve had so much worse. If you come across Lee in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto or anywhere else in the Eastern portion of our great nation, you can ask him your very own silly nickname. And if you want to beat him at S.K.A.T.E. I suggest Heelflip related tricks. In his newest Bio on the S&J site, this is apparently his Kryptonite…

This is Adam Green the skateboarder, not the singing sensation...

Yesterday, when I was lurking skate footage on youtube and not only did I learn that there’s a popular singer that shares a name with Montreal Antihero rider Adam Green, but I also discovered this, a remix for Adam Green’s Part in the (re)Public video from 2008.

Now I’m going to have email Adam and see what he thinks of the singer who shares his namesake. I’ll let you know what he says.

A little over a year ago, S&J rider Chad Dickson was struck by an SUV in the night time on a walk to a friends house. He was stuck in intensive care for about 2 weeks. He was down but not out! He came back to having a very impressive year this past year with multiple photos published, a last part in the City of New Lights video and a tonne of motivation to bounce back. A couple of the Boys, Chad Dickson, Dustin Montie and Lee Saunders came into the west warehouse yesterday in Richmond to pick out their monthly box of goodies before heading out into the sun to skate the day away. What is that Lee is holding up in his hands? None other than a Citystars board! Lee has made the move from World Industries over to Citystars! Lee is the first Canadian flow rider for the brand. Lee has been working hard this year, he has gained a fair amount of coverage both print and online, aswell has been working hard filming for the City of New Lights video and we couldnt think of a better fit for the Citystars brand! This weekend, The Damn AM contest circuit made its way through Burnaby BC, at the Bonsor skatepark. The 2 day event was full of good times, with friday having a bowl jam contest, high ollie contest and Saturday having the street contest and best trick contest. Chad Dickson can ollie higher than most regular and pretty much the same height switch! He tied for First place at 40 inches, which he later ollied after the contest ended, and split $500 to make himself $250.

As far as street, the closest up for S&J riders was Dustin Montie just missing the cut by 3 landing in at 15th place. He did however manage to sneak into 5th spot in the best trick contest. A Happy 24th birthday goes out to Chad ontop of everything else that occured this weekend.

I know this is a bit late, but here are a couple of the left over Am Getting paid photos from the afterparty and transworld premier. Everyone skated hard, unfortunately didnt make it up there. Chad managed to wack his knee real good during the event and was not able to skate the following day. Mitch Barrette sprained his foot real bad 2 days before the contest in Quebec City on tour and was unable to skate the contest. As you can tell, that didnt stop everyone from atleast making the best out of their time in Montreal. We at S&J would like to send our condolences to the family and friends of Don "the mad carver" Hartley. Don had an untimely incident this past Canada day, which in the end took his life. On the positive note of this, Don went out doing what he loved and that is skateboarding. Don was a good man and will not be forgotten by many in the skateboard world. Rest in peace Don! Keep on Rollin....

All good things must come to an end. The week has ended, the skating has finished up country and its time to head home. The Okanagon has treated everyone very well and im sure everyone cannot wait to come back again. A big thanks goes out to Dan Redmonds parents and his old friend Jeff that put up 13 people camping in their backyards over this past week. The cars and vans are packed so high with people and gear that we everyone can barely move, but it hasnt stopped our mission! We made the trip to our first destination to stay at which happened to be directly on the lake which is incredible in the morning for wake up calls, most people didnt even bother showering, we just used the lake! The past 3 days over the weekend, we barged the penticton, the Kelowna and Osoyoos skateparks for fun than went street skating after. The parks have been a great warm up and fun times with everyone. From here on out its street time! We got 4 more days of pure streets in the heat.

GO SKATEBOARDING DAY VANCOUVER!

As we all know, yesterday June 21st was fathers day, but in our world, more importantly it was Go Skateboarding Day!! The Vancouver turn out was huge, with thousands of skateboarders starting their day at the Plaza. Everyone was happy watching the Emerica team do their thing even if alot of people were a little beat up from watching Andrew Reynolds band the evening before. From the plaza the streets were packed cruising to some of the spots around downtown Vancouver to chuck tricks for cash. As everyone cruised from spot to spot, eventually we caught the attention of the police, but instead of dumping beer, handing out tickets and plain well ruining our event, they just ended up being an escort through the city streets! The day went great ending with the now traditional skate over the Georgia viaduct bridge ending at the Stratchona skatepark for a bbq and more skating to finish the day off. All in all this years day was a success, cant wait to do it again next year!

Since a couple of our team guys;Dustin Montie, Chad Dickson, and Lee Saunders are getting on the road in the next little while with the Underworld Vancouver team, we would like to pass this announcement out to you:

The Underworld (West) team are going on a skate camping trip to the Okanagan on June 25 - July 2. Our crew consists of Micky Papa, Dan Redmond, Lee Saunders, Arte Lew, Hayden Kelly, Dustin Montie and Chad Dickson. If peeps wanna meet and hang with us, just look for us skating Penticton, Kelowna and Osoyoos' skate parks in the evenings. It's gonna be tons of fun and we are looking forward to celebrate Canada Day with everyone.

Well its time for yet another quick update on what the guys have been doing with themselves all winter. This time around its kevin Lowry. Kevin spent alot of time in Europe this winter, here's a couple photos and his write up:

well to be honest I haven't been doing much. just skating and hanging out.
I spent 4 months in europe. most people would think o you must have filmed and done so much but for me i have been 4 times and i spent my own money to go so why would i Jump off a building? for the most part I try to enjoy coffee and seeing my friends from around those parts.
at the end I spent a week with the blueprint team just going on missions.
nice to hang with the boys and just talk. To be honest its hard being on the other side of the world and keep in touch.
since i have been home I started working at the skaters south shop. made a short trip to peg to see the new green apple shop and a few friends. it was a super good time. stayed in the mcdermott's basement. other then that my plans for the next while are to stay put work do a few small trips.

Drew among other guys on the team have alot of traveling over the winter. Here is Drews short but sweet update with words and photos of whats been going on with Drew:

so basically i just got back from a trip from montreal, cali, vegas, arizona. jeremy elkin who made lo-def is making another video so i went out to montreal to film for it and hang out and enjoy the east. got home for two days then instantly took off to the states with my family. was a pretty sweet time. vegas was pretty much a blur haha, arizona was too hot to skate unfortunitly, but cali was rad. such a good time out there. got to skate a ton which is always awesome. now i'm home and it feels good. now that i'm home i have been pretty much just been skating all day everyday and hanging out.

S&J Sales proudly welcomes Lee Saunders to the team roster representing World Industries skateboards and Thunder Trucks. Lee is another Vancouver transplant originally from Detroit Michigan, later moving to Windsor Ontario. Since Lee has made the move to Vancouver he has been working his way into the Canadian skateboard scene with a great positive attitude and motivation that makes you want to be around him. We have watched him progress and gain new sponsors such as Osiris Shoes and Underworld Skate Shop and definitely feel that he is a worthy addition to our team. We cannot wait to see what Lee brings to the table in the near future. Welcome to the team Lee!

GREG BREWER UPDATE...

Greg Brewer has been spending some time back in his homeland in the maritimes of New Brunswick away from Vancouver for a bit now. Since no ones heard or seen the man in quite sometime, he decided to send us a couple photos and a blog update. We all hope to see you soon Greg!

For the last few months since my great escape from Vancouvers life of skating as much as possible, drinking on the beach, and just plain NOT freezing my ass off. I've been trying my hardest to get up to no good on the East coast. Fredericton New Brunswick is the location. It's a great place to visit but it's packed with 8 foot tall snow banks and every road coverd in black ice. Getting to the liquor store and back safely gives you something to celebrate. You could emagine the celebration after driving in a white out for 3 hours both ways just to skate indoors while it's -40 degrees outside. No shortage of places to play pond hockey though! For now the snow has melted and summer is digging it's claws into our frost bitten ground. I've been out canoeing and camping already, traveld to a few surrounding cities on skate trips with the homies, drivin dirt bikes for the first time. And after a hard fought battle. Finaly learnt late shuv's from an East Coast legond himself, Matt Craig. Thats my update. Time to skate!

This past Saturday one of the newer shops in the BC lower mainland, Bobby Paul hosted a grand opening, which included skating, bbq, drinks, music by Matt the Alien and the monster bus and good people hanging out. S&J riders Dustin Montie, Chad Dickson and birthday boy Lee Saunders headed out there for the good times. The even lasted from 12 till 4 and a good time was had by all.
